The immune system distinguishes between self and non-self by recognizing antigens, which are molecules or molecular structures typically found on the surface of pathogens.

Upon detecting the presence of pathogens, the immune system activates an immune response. This can involve various components such as white blood cells, antibodies, and complement proteins, working together to eliminate the invading organisms.

The immune system "remembers" past infections through memory cells. This memory allows for a faster and more effective response upon encountering the same or similar pathogens in the future. This adaptive nature is a key feature of the immune system.

Inflammation is a crucial part of the immune response. It involves the release of various chemicals that attract immune cells to the site of infection, isolate and eliminate pathogens, and promote tissue repair.

The immune system acts as a surveillance system throughout the body. This involves multiple organs, tissues, and cells that serve as barriers to prevent the entry of pathogens from the external environment.

B cells are a type of white blood cell that plays a central role in the immune system. They produce antibodies (immunoglobulins) such as IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE. These antibodies bind to antigens on pathogens, marking them for destruction or neutralizing their harmful effects.

Immunoglobulins or antibodies are proteins produced by B cells. The different classes of antibodies, IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE, have specific functions.
